Itโs a big year for growth. But very young kids develop at different paces, so it can be hard to compare them along the way.
Check out these developmental milestones to get a better idea of which skills are typically expected between 15-24 months.
PHYSICAL MILESONES
This year, Expect to see big things happening with the big muscles (gross motor skills), as well as development in small muscle movement (fine motor skills).

โข Throw and kick a ball; try to catch with both hands
โข Stand on tiptoes and balance on one foot

COGNITIVE MILESTONES
โข Enjoy more complicated pretend play, like pretending that a box is a House
โข Remember and talk about things that happened in the past, using phrases like โthe other dayโ or โa long time agoโ
โข Do three- to four-piece puzzles
โข Group toys by type, size, or colour
โข Recite nursery rhymes or a song with you
โข May follow two-step directions, like โtake off your shirt and hang it upโ
LANGUAGE MILESTONES
โข Understand the words for familiar people, everyday objects, and body parts
โข Use a variety of single words by 18 months and speak in sentences of two to four words by 24 months
โข Repeat words they hear
โข Start asking โWhatโs that?โ and โWhy?โ
SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL MILESTONES
โข Mimic what other kids and adults do and say
โข Be happy to play near, if not with, other kids
โข Start to realize they can do things without your help
โข Disobey more than before, doing things theyโre told not to do, just to test what happens
โข Have tantrums when frustrated
โข Show increasing separation anxiety by 18 months, which typically eases a lot by 24 months
